Group B is quite not as tight as it was on Friday morning, when the Republic of Ireland, Russia and Slovakia all had the same points tally from the same number of games, but it is still one of the more difficult ones to call.

Yet the picture is likely to become much clearer by the time the Irish complete their stint in Moscow, where they will kick off two points behind their hosts, who beat Macedonia a just before the Republic shared a 0-0 draw at home to the Slovaks.

A Russia victory would make them significant favourites to qualify for the Euro 2012 finals automatically and also put the Irish in danger of missing out on on the play-offs, especially if Slovakia beat Armenia later in the day.

Russia and Slovakia must meet each other next month however, so all would not be lost for Giovanni Trapattoni and Co, whose last two fixtures, against Andorra and Armenia, should bring in six points.

Victory on the artificial surface at the Luzhniki Stadium would be an immense fillip of course but the Russians have already beaten Ireland in Dublin and Trapattoni is likely to pick three players who featured in the 4-2 defeat in Moscow in September 2002 that hastened the departure of then-manager Mick McCarthy.
